A major redesign for the homepage.
I just had to do this. This page is about 3 years old and already survived two counter services and one guestbook - I had to take them off this page as they became disfunctional. So I decided to give the pages a brush-up, straighten the content a bit, and boldly click "delete all files" before uploading these new or renewed pages.
Of course I expect you all to miss something, so please send me your comments. A guestbook will be put on this site as soon as I find one I can trust. A counter .... forget about that. The only thing that counts is that YOU are reading this.
For all of you who have linked some content, but not the homepage: I'm sorry, but to keep my files in order I decided to name them properly, and changed ".html" files to ".htm", e. g. Please renew your links and keep smiling.

"Achtundvierziger Forty Eighters - the German revolution of 1848/49, the United States and the American Civil War"
is the name of a new book by Wolfgang Hochbruck, Ulrich Bachteler and Henning Zimmermann (Eds.).

The revolutions of 1848 and 1849 are commonly being remembered in Germany as failed, most of the revolutionists are forgotten. But the history of the revolutions does not end with the escape or emigration of its protagonists. This paperback collects nine essays from german and american historicans, giving new insights upon the direct and indirect relation between american democracy and european attempts on democracy in the 19th century. The subjects of these essays reach from the intellectual background of the revolutions to the participation of "Forty-Eigthers" in the fighting of the American Civil War.

Workshop of the 1st Michigan Infantry Soldiers' Committee, Burg Blankenheim

Essential requirements to the uniform:
bummer or kepi with havelock,
shell jacket or frock coat,
uniform should look new, brass polished,
A-frame tents,
luxury items encouraged.
Havelocks and stuff can be ordered at a moderate price at Dieter "Paule" Schäfer, Am Dürling 1, 50226 Frechen; Tel. 02234 - 59519. He, too, can fit your shell jacket with a ingenious upgrade to frock coat.
We'll have a "muster-in" scenario, so please wrap your uniform (not your leather gear and gun) in brown paper. Please show up to this scenario with period civilian clothes. You mustn't expend all your money on a stovepipe hat and frock, but the more you take this seriously the more fun we'll have "mustering in". In Camp, we'll get a medical check, a muster-in roll, DRILL by CHICO, supply of leather gear and weapons and drill, supply of uniforms and drill.
Patriotic speeches will be held at any occasion. Drill at any other.
The civilian part of the event will be a visit by the "1861 Ladies Union Aid Society" on sunday morning, a historical photo, church service, choir singing, mail call, court martial and several actions which I better not post on this website.

There are many voices supporting the motion to merge our various Union "regiments" into one "17th Missouri" for battalion drill and reenactment purposes, as the 17th MO was an entirely German regiment within the Osterhaus Brigade.

Results of the Annual meeting of the UCR in Burg Blankenheim, 15.11.00

New chairperson and executive committee:
Prez: Oliver Schwarz
Vice Prez: Ulrich Sanft
Treasuress: Anja Kayser
Scribe: Karl-Heinz Petri
Beisitzerin: Christiane Dölling

New society periodical: We'll receive two issues p. a. of the "Marion Rifleman" due March and September. The "Rifleman" will feature our news and announcements.

"Official Event Report" on Babenhausen: a success, but troublesome regarding some legal hubbubb with the Hessian forst and nature authority.

Annual meeting and ball: A success all the way thanks to the Siebenschritt players, many helping hands and plenty of foodstuff.

A homepage for the UCR is about to be designed, with the URL of http://www.reenacting.de - this is the best solution as the URL http://www.ucr.de is already occupied by the Umwelt Concepte Ruhr, a plumbing and sanitation company.
The person-in-charge of the new homepage is Ulrich Sanft (ulrich_sanft@hotmail.com).
