"The Pettycoat Flag"

"The Petticoat Flag" describes a scene before the battle of Carthage. Ms Lucy Hood, the daughter of the loyal sheriff of Carthage, Norris Hood, had made a union flag and hid it between her petticoats. When Sigel's troops marched into the city she is said to have reveiled it to the cheering soldiers.
